I made the layout for a non-profit organisation magazine. We agreed
on x euros per page. After completed the work I sent a bill.
Clients response after several inquiries about when they could
possibly pay: " There are also several ads in the magazine which were
from the customers (I actually designed some of those ads and billed
them separately). We only pay you for editorial layout. According to our
calculations you have:
... page 4: 6/10 pages of layout
... page 17: 5/9 pages of layout
... page 24: 9/10 pages of layout
They had measured every single page in the magazine with a ruler
and calculated out the square centimeters filled with commercials!?!
Me: Your assumption that you don't have to pay me for putting
commercials to the layout is wrong. Its the same amount of work than
putting pictures etc. Would you like to also calculate margins and line
spacing out of my work since they are empty space?
The client: We are very disappointed in you. It seems you are not a
professional at all.
Next time we met in court. I won. My lawyer told me she had never
seen a verdict that fast...
