I hear all the time people complaining that they think there is only a few ISP choices. Like where I am it's either SBC or Comcast. I usually get a bit annoyed about that, but not just because people don't bother to ask and only pay attention to what's on TV, but because of exchanges like this....

Customer "they are the only choice"
Me: "No they aren't, we provide the same service but for $5/more a month for 6 months then we are at the same price as they are for the rest of the time of service."
Customer: "oh well that's just too expensive"
Me: "Really? It only costs you $30 more over 6 months for better service, reliability and no call center in india to deal with. Then it's the same price."
Customer: "But that's just too expensive. But damn those call centers suck"
Me: "Well let us know if you would like to switch."

6 weeks later same person....

Customer: "I can't pull up any websites can you help?"
Me: "Sure, what's your name so I can get your account information"
Customer: ""
Me: "I'm sorry, but I can't assist you, you're not one of my customers"
Customer: "But you fixed my computer and told me you provide DSL 6 months ago and I really don't want to call the SBC customer service Dept. because I can't understand what they are saying and it always takes 2 weeks to get any problems fixed"
Me: "I would be happy to assist you, but it's a $50 phone support fee."
Customer: "But telcoisp does it for free!!"
Me: "That's right, you pay them for your service and support is part of that. You don't pay me for your internet service and my time costs money. If you were my customer I'd be happy to help. I can't help when it's not a network under my control."
Customer: "But I just want it to work! Can't you help me make it work without charging me?"
Me: "The only way I can help you without charging is if you're a customer"
Customer: "But I'm under a contract."
Me: "...."
Customer: "Can you help me now if I promise to switch to your service when my contract is up?"
Me: "Sure, for a $50 charge. It's not our network."
Customer: "No, I mean for free."
Me: "....."

We get atleast 10 of these a month. Cost isn't the only thing, but service does cost a little bit more. Either stop complaing about poor service or pay a little more.
