How do companies manage to hire some people?
Years ago, when I was assigned my first paying job doing web design/integration, I was asked to work with a consultant who was building the company's web site. My job was to assist, as the job was proceeding rather slowly.
I very quickly learned why progress was glacial. The consultant was fresh out of web design night classes. She has learned some very specific, very narrow techniques well, but her general understanding was extremely shallow.
I realized just how inexperienced she was when, while sitting beside her, I watched her type URLs into the browser address box. This self-described "web expert" painstakingly and routinely typed h t t p : / / in front of each web address. Every. Single. Time. Even when I pointed it out to her that it wasn't necessary, she kept on doing it.
The next day, I showed her how to use the Measurement tool in Photoshop to help rotate images. She stared at me, and in hushed tones, called me a "wizard."
She was gone within three weeks. And I had started a new career.
