Customer calls in begging for help with an ethernet modem she has been given by her ISP which she cannot get to work with her new computer. After a few short tests it becomes clear that there is no service from ISP, so I advised her to contact them for help.

Later on, the same customer calls back in tears. She had called the ISP and explained to them exactly what I had told her to. They refused to support her because her ethernet cable was yellow and they only supply red ones (yes, really) and told her she would need to buy a red cable.

I calmed her down and asked her to check the markings and pinout on each cable. Sure enough, both were standard Cat5e straight through. Perhaps I should not have done, but I told the customer to call them again and LIE about the colour, suggesting that the ISP probably does not have a spectrographic analyser that they can use over the phone...
